Playground

The grandmothers gather
in a grove
by the elementary school.

Children, babies, intersect the scene
at odd intervals
watching, grasping, squirming.

Here we incubate the young
absent adolescence,
the crimes of adulthood,

underneath power lines,
far from the highway,
in the shadow of apartment blocks,

with a warmth less obscured,
in games in which to revel,
and forget.

Bodies play upon the ground
reciving sensations that arrive suddenly,
then abruptly recede:

Beestings, enmity, affection,
a balloon, a shadow, an afternoon...
